Did you know that food is just as important to your health as medicine? A well-balanced diet can help to reduce the risk of falls, maintain independence, and give you more energy. Join us at this virtual event for older adults on January 15, 2024, from 10:00 - 11:00 am (MT) to learn more about your nutrition needs and concerns for older adults' prevention of health issues through nutrition risk screening.

Speaker Bio:

Jennifer Sundberg, Registered Dietitian, Alberta Health Services

Jennifer Sundberg has been practising as a Registered Dietitian for 30 years (although it feels like a lot less!). She has worked in various areas, including acute care, long term care, home care / supportive living, and public health. Her most recent roles in nutrition have a focus on older adults.

In her spare time, she likes to walk her dog, cycle leisurely, listen to old time radio shows, and spend time with her family.

Join the Alberta Association of Optometrists and Dr. Ruby Mangat for a presentation on keeping your eyes healthy as you age.

You’ll leave the presentation with a better understanding of:

  2. How optometrists can help you maintain healthy vision and eye health
  3. Common eye health problems as you age
  4. The connection between healthy eyesight and a healthy lifestyle, including preventing falls

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Ruby Mangat

Dr. Mangat was born and raised in Edmonton and has traveled extensively to pursue her education. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC and then further on to pursue a Doctorate of Optometry from the New England College of Optometry in Boston, Massachusetts. As part of her professional training, Dr. Mangat has traveled coast-to-coast providing eye care from ocular diseases in Prince Rupert, BC to providing pre-and post-cataract surgical care and contact lens specialty and training in east Boston. Special areas of interest include ocular disease and contact lenses. Since the last few years, Dr. Mangat has been in private practice. Dr. Mangat enjoys spending time with family and loves to travel.

Join us at this virtual event as we cover anxiety symptoms and disorders in older adults.

We will discuss fear of falling and how to detect symptoms of anxiety.

We will review management strategies for older adults with anxiety or fear of falling.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Zahra Goodarzi

Associate Professor in the Section of Geriatrics within the Department of Medicine and Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Zahra Goodarzi is an academic geriatrician. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Section of Geriatrics within the Department of Medicine and Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary.

Her work has focused on mental illness and neuropsychiatric symptoms in older adults or those with neurodegenerative disorder. She also examines the experiences of older adults living in supportive living and long term care with frailty, concomitant mood disorders or neuropsychiatric symptoms.

The Dementia-Inclusive Choices for Exercise (DICE) toolkit was co-designed by a collaborative of researchers, people with dementia, care partners, health care professionals, and community service providers. The DICE toolkit aims to build capacity to support people with dementia in exercise and fall prevention by giving exercise providers the knowledge, strategies, and resources they need to support people with dementia in their programs and services.

In this webinar, we will:

  • Share how we co-designed the DICE toolkit (learning modules, videos, and resources)
  • Describe the impact of the DICE toolkit among exercise providers
  • Discuss key content from the DICE learning modules
  • Describe how to use the DICE toolkit to extend your learning and support people with dementia in your practice

Speaker Bio:

Laura Middleton, Associate Professor and Schlegel Research Chair in Dementia and Active Living

Laura Middleton is an Associate Professor and Schlegel Research Chair in Dementia and Active Living in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo. She partners with people with dementia, care partners, health care professionals, and community service providers to increase the quality and number of supports for the health, function, and wellbeing of people living with dementia, including those focused on fall prevention. She is motivated by the personal experience of dementia in her family, but also by the many incredible people with dementia that she has had the pleasure to work with over the past 18 years.
